Use rules to auto-group transactions

Use case #1: auto-group credit card payment and transfer transactions (match on the same amount)
Use case #2: auto-group credits + debits from the same merchant to denote refunds

Grouping/Matching transactions is table stakes/typical of other personal finance apps. They are tuned well to know that a payment from checking for $101.10 to a credit card in which the dates may be off by a day or 4, it will still know it is a payment/transfer. I'm currently running YNAB 4, YNAB SaaS and Actual Budget along side of Lunch Money.
Of note, dates are a potential issue in Lunch Money to do this though. In other apps, we can choose between transaction date or processed date which doesn't seem to be an option Lunch Money. When reconsiling between the different apps, I find myself adjusting transaction dates in Lunch Money but not the others.
This creates a bit of a mess to clean up and may be a reason to stop using Lunch Money.

Another use case I didn't find below would be for investment accounts. These can be quite noisy when many dividends can get paid all on the same day from different equities. I could turn off downloading transactions but I like tracking the actual money movement into those accounts. Grouping here would be nice.

I'm not sure about the "auto" part, and what is exactly meant by that in this context. Like, I don't need Lunch Money to try and automatically detect anything for me.
I just want to be able to select "Group Transactions" as an action for a Rule, same as we have Split Transaction, set category, etc.
To solve for the "Which of these 20 transactions that we've found throughout your history do you want to actually group?", the action should have a "Group timespan" field (or "Group bucket range", or something), which says that a group will be created for all transaction that fall between [1st] and [20th] (just as an example) of every month.
Then maybe have some pre-defined choices as well. Like, group all transactions that match the rule criteria, that were created within the same [Month] / [Week] / [Day].
So, basically, the action fields would look something like the below for this action type:
- Action: Group Transactions
- Set group: [Category], [Tags], [Payee], [Account], etc.
- Group matching transactions within the same: [Month], [Week], [Day], [Custom,<range between two days of month, typically to account for cases with user defined budget periods>]
I think that will cover most of the cases for grouping transactions. And then today's rule engine for actually finding the transactions you want to group can be used. "Just" add grouping as an action we can define. 😊

Will this also work for internal transfers as well? Like between my bank accounts or between different spaces within the same bank account? (Wise for example).

Still sounds like a great feature… 4 years later! (sigh)
